5 Common Mistakes Made When Brushing Teeth

When it comes to brushing your teeth, there's a chance that you are making some of the common mistakes that make toothbrushing less effective than it should be. Here are five common mistakes you should know about:

  1. Flossing After You Brush: Flossing after you brush your teeth is not the most efficient way to get it done. This is because when you floss, you are removing food particles and other bacteria from in between the teeth that your toothbrush can't get to. In order to remove it completely from your mouth, you will want to brush your teeth after you floss. Doing this is the best way to avoid cavities.
  2. Brushing Straight: Some people will brush straight instead of brushing around in circles. When you brush straight, you aren't getting the gum line where most bacteria is built up throughout the day. Plus, brushing in circles actually scrubs at your teeth instead of simply moving the bacteria back and forth on the surface of the teeth.
  3. Not Taking Your Time: When it comes to brushing your teeth at the end of a long day, especially, you might be rushing through the process. Essentially, brushing isn't doing any good for you at this point because you aren't removing any bacteria. You should be brushing your teeth for at least two minutes for the most effective cleaning.
  4. Not Replacing Your Toothbrush: Your toothbrush needs to be replaced at least every 3 months. Otherwise, all the bacteria that has gathered on the toothbrush over time is going to be put back into your mouth every time you use the old brush. On top of this, the bristles on old toothbrushes become dull and bent, which makes them less effective at scrubbing at your teeth.
  5. Not Using Fluoride Toothpaste: Some people are concerned about the health effects of fluoride toothpaste. However, you shouldn't have to worry as long as you are not swallowing the toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste is the most effective way to clean your teeth because it helps to strengthen your teeth. If the toothpaste you are using is making your teeth sensitive, consider talking with your dentist about what kind of toothpaste you can use that will be comfortable for you while still effectively cleaning your mouth.

When you know these five common mistakes that are made when brushing teeth, you can be sure that you know what you need to do to avoid making them yourself.
